S10E06 - Entering the Tomb

Apr 19, 2025  –

The heroes start the episode at the entrance to the Tomb of Annihilation.

Krariak, Silas, and Sophi are trapped inside the main entrance cave, where Krariak has just triggered a trap by putting the shrine cubes into the cavities on the wall. The room, now closed to the outside and quickly filling with gas, has no other apparent features. Silas casts Rope Trick, and the three heroes enter it after only taking minor damage from the deadly fumes.

Meanwhile, the rest of the party, which was at the hidden entrance revealed by Avilos’s most recent acquisition, worries about their friends and go back to the front of the cliff where Chos casts Stone Shape creating a little door on the stone slab that blocks the exit, and allowing Sophi, Krariak, and Silas to escape. Krariak has some difficulty being pulled out of the room through the window by his friends, and then falling on the ground, but eventually makes it.

Avilos then gives a five-second heads-up to his friends to clear the way, and then casts Fireball into the room through the tiny door that Chos has created. Again, this turns out to be flammable gas, and a huge explosion takes place, the violence of which almost crushes the pyromaniac bard into tiny bits, and almost topples the sinister obelisk next to him.

Then the heroes go to the Western cave where they put the cubes in the nine wall cavities, making antagonist Trickster Gods face each other. When the last cube is in, they all blink for an instant and then disappear as the stone wall that held them slides up, revealing the corridor behind it. This next part of the corridor only continues for a few meters until another stone slab blocks the way. This second slab has a large grinning skull on it and, below it, an iron lever. As Sophi approaches the wall, a glass sand timer suddenly comes out of the grinning skull’s mouth, rotates, and sand starts trickling down. The whole party panics and runs outside and away from the corridor..

After a few minutes pass and no sounds come out of the corridor, the cautious group carefully approaches the corridor to find the second stone lab gone and the corridor continuing for a few meters. At the end, the coddiro splits left and right, and, on the space between the bifurcation, they see a large devilish green face with a mouth big enough to hold someone inside.

Krariak charges forward through the corridor, tripping a pressure plate trap that causes poisonous darts to shoot at him. He then turns left at the end of the corridor, where he sees a large staircase going down. He arrives at the railing just in time to see a humanoid with a mask on its face look at him and then scurry away. While the rest of the party is carefully crossing the corridor to join him, Krariak rushes down the stairs to try to find this man, but he disappears into thin air.

Upstairs, the rest of the party inspects the devilish face. Sophi casts Mage Hand and tries to find out what’s inside the magical darkness, but she can’t tell much due to the Mage Hand’s limitations. Avilos casts mage hand too and brings it inside with a lit torch, but when she takes it out, the torch has been split into two.

At a loss about what’s going on, but weary of introducing their limbs or heads inside, the heroes leave the face alone and go to the end of the right corridor, where they see, through a glass window, a vaulted tomb with six skeleton-like creatures sitting on chairs against the walls and wearing papier-mache masks. On the northern wall, two huge bear-like statues hold a very large radius bronze disk covered with eyes that are constantly darting around. In the middle of the room, a sarcophagus lies on top of a dais.

Krariak destroys the glass window and rushes towards the disk and tries to take it, but the stone statues’ grip is too strong. Right after that, Chos identifies undead energy emanating from the skeletons sitting on the thrones, which, now that Krariak has soiled the disk with his hands, wake up and run towards Krariak, wielding a longsword in one hand and a dangerous necrotic index finger in the other. On his turn, Avilos casts Fog Cloud, turning the whole vaulted tomb room into darkness.

A few rounds of combat later involving fireballs, shockwaves, and plenty of hack and slash, the wights are destroyed, and Krariak feels much weaker than before the fight started.

The heroes then inspect the room more carefully. Sophi, paranoid about the eyes, covers the shield with the dead wight’s clothing while Silas unsuccessfully tries to open the sarcophagus. Eventually, the heroes take the dead wight’s bloodied papier-mache masks, put them on, sit on the chairs they were initially in, and discover two hidden doors, one behind Silas’s throne, and the other behind Ellie’s. When Silas opens his secret door, revealing a stone staircase going down, the concentrated gas that had been accumulating on the other side reacts with the throne room’s air, causing an explosion that sends him flying across the room. Ellie’s secret door doesn’t explode and leads to a very long corridor that spans several rooms.

Meanwhile, Ellie and Chos persuade Krariak to try to open the sarcophagus now that he’s wearing the papier mache mask, and he manages to do that. Inside the sarcophagus, he finds a pile of bones from a zorbo and a ring. He takes the ring and, as soon as he touches it, the spirit of Obo’laka, the zorbo trickster god, possesses Krariak. Krariak, who was already on the opposite end of “cautious”, becomes even more reckless and also gains a way to attack people psychically.

The heroes then decide to explore the explosive corridor and climb down its staircase, where they find an underground river. They follow it upstream for a short while and find a waterfall with a large chest hanging from chains in front of it. Sophi tries to pick the lock but fails and instantly disappears. Some of the heroes then stand around wondering what to do, others locate the nearest key and start chasing after it, and others start hitting the chest. After only a couple of rounds of rage hitting the chest, Krariak destroys it, rescuing Sophi, who had been teleported inside. The rogue reveals that there was nothing in the chest except for a handful of coins, a gold tankard, and a scroll. She gives Chos the scroll, Avilos the tankard, and Krariak a handful of coins, keeping the remaining 297 other gold pieces for herself.

The heroes then head back to the vaulted tomb and walk through the Southern corridor. Krariak is in front, carrying Sophi on his back, to minimize floor contact that could trigger traps, while the elf looks for traps. On the way through the corridor, they find stairs going down, which they ignore, and enter the first room the corridor leads to. As they step into it, Sophi gets violently pulled towards a metallic statue that lies on its Eastern wall, and as his daggers and arrows touch the statue, they rust and become useless. Krariak is able to resist the pulling force and stays on his feet.

Avilos arrives next, enters the room, and steps aside, resisting the magnetic pull. Silas, after taking off all his metallic belongings, enters next. Chos, clad in heavy armor and loaded with metal, quickly decides to stay behind and let Fionghan, Thorn, Ellie, and Falkor go in.

The episode ends with another failed attempt from Krariak to snatch shield-looking objects from statues.
